Stay Local

Reasons why it’s Better to use OBW Local Manufacturing over Off-Shore Manufacturing

californiaOBW’s printing services can be competitive with off-shore manufacturing when all costs are considered, including development time, required trips to the source, shipping cost, duties, delays, and loss of intellectual property protection. OBW’s works closely with your company counterparts to reduce the cost of of the finished good through looking at alternative materials (HDPE or PET vs Glass), Printing vs Shrinklabeling, Printing vs PS Labeling, plate or cylinder charges associated with shrink labels, freight rates, and minimizing inventory requirements.

13 reasons keeping it local is better than going off shore

1. SAVE TIME – No long lead-time is required to get purchase orders acceptance, materials procurement, production scheduled, plates or cylinders made, and shipments completed.
2. REDUCE INVENTORY – No need to run millions of impressions. JIT (Just-in-Time) strategy can be utilized. Upside volume in sales can be quickly accommodated.
3. REDUCE SHIPPING TIME – If your product is coming from overseas (such as Asia), it could take 30 OTW days (on the water) for shipments to arrive. U.S. shipments only take 1-5 days.
4. NO DELAYS – with U.S. Customs or Ports of Entry inspections.
5. REDUCE SHIPPING RATES – when products are sourced in the U.S. Shipping containers can cost over $3,000 each, plus inland freight charges.
6. NO DUTIES – no duties on goods produced in the U.S. There are no assist papers that need to be filed.
7. DEVELOPMENT TIME – Product development time is greatly reduced. Normal time for a product – from concept through tooling to first article in the U.S. – is about 2 weeks. In Asia, it can be 6 months or longer.
8. DESIGNER COSTS – Cost to send an artist or designer to an off-shore company can cost thousands. Our California factory costs significantly less to get to and can be done overnight.  Most work can be done via emails and proofs.
Communications is very difficult when doing business off-shore and can cause costly mistakes. Language differences are often the reason.
10. BRAND – Many products produced off-shore find their way to the “street market” and diminish the brand name of the manufacturer.
11. QUALITY CONTROL – Quality issues are easily managed at OBW. Quality issues from off-shore may require them to be sent back and forth several times, causing huge delays. If new production is required, another production cycle, including time on the water is required.
12. TIME ZONES – Time zones hinder development and production schedules. With anywhere up to 14 hour difference, delays of at least one day to get responses to questions and issues are not uncommon.
13. TRADEMARK – Intellectual property is much safer in the U.S. Asia has a history of producing & shipping counterfeit goods to the states. Laws are not enforced in Asia to protect U.S. companies from being “knocked-off,” trademarks & patents largely being ignored.
